The files were mostly written with the Matlab version R2014a. Using the standard Matlab movie commands such as avifile(), addframe(), movie(), the resulting AVI movie files became extremely large. That is why most codes saved the individual frames as PNG files that were later on combined into an animated GIF file using ImageMagick's convert utility. (convert -delay 20 frame*.png movie.gif) This resulted into movie files of reasonable size.
